In this section we’ll walk through how to set up a basic scene with presets and messages.

Adding a Scene

Starting from the empty Scene browser, let's first add a new Scene.

Tapping the grey “+” tile will add a new Scene.

A new Scene tile will appear with the default name “New Scene”.

Tap and hold on the new Scene tile for two seconds and a Context Menu will appear.

The context menu contains four items which we can use to manipulate our Scene in the Scene browser:

  • Delete, tap and hold this option for two seconds to delete the Scene.

  • Move, tap this and other Scene tiles will start a pulsing animation indicating that they are possible destinations. Move a Scene onto another Scene will make these two Scenes switch tiles/positions.

  • Rename, opens up the on-screen keyboard and lets you rename the Scene.

  • Duplicate, creates a copy or the Scene, adding it to the end of the list and naming the copy <Name_of_original_scene>_dup

Currently the Scene does not contain any content and will not do anything useful. So lets enter the Scene and add some Presets.

The Scene Performance Screen is the main Screen for performing and presents a variety of information in relation to this.

You can read more about the Performance Screen here, but for now, let’s just add a Preset to the Scene.

Like the Scene Tiles, Preset Tiles have a similar Context Menu, which can be opened by tapping and holding the Tile for two seconds.

Adding a Preset

Tap one of the empty tiles marked with a “+”. This will open up a menu of different tile options you can choose from

For now, select the Preset option.

A new Preset named “New Preset” will appear in this tile.

This Preset can be activated and deactivated by pressing the corresponding footswitch and can be edited by tapping the tile on screen.

As the Preset is one we just created it will not do anything on activation yet, so lets edit the Preset in the Preset Editor.

Adding Messages

The Preset Editor is where you configure your Preset and control which MIDI Messages should be sent and when. The Preset Editor contains a lot of options for your Presets, but for this basic walkthrough well just add a few messages.

The Preset Editor contains a number of tabs, each dedicated to a specific trigger of MIDI messages. The editor will open with the “On Activate” tab, which contains a list of MIDI Messages that will send, when this Preset is activated.

This being a basic walkthrough, lets add a basic MIDI PC message to this list.

The menu gives a hint to the variety of MIDI Messages supported by MORTRIX, which you can read more about here, but for now we are looking for a MIDI PC message.

In the submenu that opens, there are a number of different types of MIDI messages to choose from. Select the PC option.

Instead of using basic MIDI Messages, the Device Profiles in MORTRIX will make it much easier for you to control your effects.

When adding a new Message select the “Device Function” option in the popup menu, browse through the device profiles and select the device function you wish to control. Read more about Device Profiles here.

Configuring a Message

The newly added MIDI message will be created with default values, which is likely not what you need. So to set the channel and PC value respectively.

Tab the channel value and then select the desired channel in the menu that opens.

Next we’ll change the PC value.

Tap the value box and a popup will appear, where you can drag the slider for quick and coarse adjustments or tap the “+” and “-” buttons for single increment changes.

Activating Live-mode in the upper right corner, will send out MIDI Messages in real time as you edit the value.

When done,

Tap outside the slider popup to dismiss it.

If needed you can switch to the “On Deactivate” tap and add MIDI Messages there as well.

When you are done editing your Preset

Tap the arrow in the upper left corner to exit the Preset Editor.

Your Preset is now saved in the containing Scene and you are back at the Performance Screen.

Now, if you press the footswitch corresponding to your new Preset, it will activate, light up in an orange colour and send the MIDI Messages added to the “On Activate” list.

Press the footswitch again to deactivate the Preset and the Messages you might have added to the “On Deactivate” list will be sent.

Congratulations, you have now created your first Scene, Preset and Messages and are ready to be creative with MORTRIX!
